The future is NOW!   duh I’m gonna keep this thing, I love having a place where I can put my writing out there to be viewed by entirely anonymous people.

This quarter in retrospect

Looking back, I was hesitant to actually sit down and write my research paper for a rather strange reason:  I do them really well.  I have always been a very skilled writer due to my fast paced, creative imagination, and when it comes down to doing a paper, I always put it off till the last night, not entirely because of procrastination, but because I know how well I can just sit down and crank out the pages.  This paper, of collegiate standards was a good thing for me because it showed me that my skills as a writer were well established for the college atmosphere and that my errors were really in citation and small punctuation oversights.

Op-Ed rules and conventions

Basically the only thing that appears to be entirely certain in the op-ed genre is that it has to be succinct.  No page after page rambling, just short, concise, to the point.  Chuck Norris’s op-ed’s on a conservative blogroll I read for laughs doesn’t appear to follow any real regulations, yet he gets the admiration and respect of hundreds if not thousands of loyal readers.  Basically the only other thing you need to do is care about what you are writing about enough to actually get out and write it in the first place.  Now if you want to make a very credible and interesting op-ed you can follow all the rules as described by the academic world, but otherwise there is no real necessity.

Op-Ed persuasiveness

While Logos, pathos, and ethos may be all critical elements in any persuasive piece, Aristotle did NOT account for the internet when he came up with them.  Frankly, an Op-Ed written on the subject of offshore drilling lacked all of them except logos, which is where most of the internet stands.  People online simply argue with logic to make the people using facts and emotions look stupid as hell.  Logic is without a doubt one of the most powerful tools available for any internet writing, because if your logic is correct, by the time a person can type a full response they usually (assuming they are not complete idiots) they already know they are wrong.

Different Audiences: Academia and the Internetz

When writing something like a research paper or anything similar that is destined for an academic audience, there are numerous painstaking rules and regulations you have to follow, accompanied with providing fully detailed information on the extra data you used.  The alternative, writing for an electronic audience, is that there are no rules.  You don’t need a damned paragraph here, or a citation there.  You are ANONYMOUS and your writing only reflects that.  Online, I could steal anyone’s identity and simply bash them into nonexistence, just because.  The web is the most vile natured, self destructive creation that mankind has ever wrought, and we use it to do whatever we want.  If there were rules that had to be obeyed on the internet… well it just wouldn’t be the internet anymore.

Research Project Description

My analytical research topic is natural gas drilling in the midwest and western United States.  As you may know, with fossil fuel supplies dwindling on the brink of disappearance, the buried natural gas supplies under the United States are looking more and more appealing every day.  Unfortunately the methods that these companies use to harvest the gas is less than safe for the environment and nearby residents as it pollutes groundwater and the air.  My paper, visible under the “pages” section, covers the dangers, risks, and reasoning behind domestic gas drilling.

Opinion Editorial

As America’s great depression grew to a close, Franklin Delano Roosevelt was behind the wheel of the nation, pulling us from the ashes with his New Deal program. His vision was to literally re-create America by modernizing it; building new dams, new roads across the nation, giving nationwide work to everyone in order to not only modernize the country but to save it from total self destruction. When the economy first tanked on 9/12/01, it was simply a downward spiral with every effort made to grab the reigns of the stock market, to repair the shattered foreign investments, and to raise the United State’s GDP back to a sufficient level. The governments skill at breaking down foreign trade agreements and shipping literally millions of jobs to third world nations finally came back to bite us when, after two very unpopular wars, six years of a do nothing congress, and CEO’s and chairmen of major global investment banks making millions every year. We are no longer the most powerful entity in the worlds view, not militarily, not financially (by far).

To put us in perspective with China at the moment, we are right where the Chinese want us: right in front, bent over, with our pants around our ankles.

However, due to a recent turn of events and the demise of the most unpopular president in recorded U.S. history, America has a glint of hope to look forward to. Barack Obama. Not only is the hope an American idea, but a dream shared by the whole world. If America bites the bullet, so will everyone else. The dollar is still powerful enough to command enough of the worlds economy to pull everyone down with us. However, with the economy on the verge of tanking, both presidential candidates were caught off guard by the prospect of having to entirely rethink their political campaign. With Obama’s victory, he will need not only effective, well balanced ideas, but also the help of his entire staff.

Obama is set to change the world, with a whole campaign built on the promise. But in order for him to truly make a major dent in American destiny, I think he needs to take a serious lesson from Frank D. Roosevelt. While the ecological situation was much less severe seventy years ago, many of they things FDR did to re-create the U.S. economy was at the cost of large ecological damage.

For instance, the Hoover Dam’s creation of Lake Mead annihilated hundreds of acres of pristine land, and the dam itself chokes the natural downstream water supply. It might not seem entirely right at this point in time to sacrifice what little we have left of the natural environment, but in order to properly save the economy we may have to. The measures I’m speaking of consist of government controlled jobs, not ones bid on as usual, to re-create the entire interstate system, expanding natural gas production in the west where poverty hits a huge high, re-creation of American manufacturing such as American weaponry (if we have to fight so many wars, lets make some real money with fewer smart bombs and more dumb bombs) which has been the peak designing and producing nation for the past 200 years. Obama’s plan to “mix up” his cabinet with both liberals and conservatives may be the best thing to happen to this nation in order to collapse the bi-partisan do nothing groups in current power. When both sides can work together instead of fight, we can truly expand our classic national operation of liberty on our shores, and doing whatever we can to save the world from total economic devastation.

Obama, you have my support, but I as well of the rest of the world will be awaiting the coming of your legacy. Key’s in the mailbox.  Good luck.
